North Haven stonewalled North
Branford's first series and forced them to punt. The Indians wasted
no time getting on the board. On their first play from scrimmage,
Billy McDonald fired a 67 yard touchdown pass to Greg Volpe down the
far right sideline and took a quick 6-0 lead.
After a short kickoff, the
Thunderbirds drove down into North Haven's red zone, but turned the
ball over on downs inside the 10 yard line. The Indians then ground
out a 10 play, 90+ yard drive to eat up the rest of the first
quarter, and culminated it with a 5 yard Joseph Burr touchdown
around the left end. Mark Zurlis drilled the 2 point conversion and
the Indians took a 14-0 lead.
North Branford put together another
long drive in the second quarter and then turned it over, so the
score remained 14-0 North Haven at the half. Early in the 3rd
quarter, North Branford recovered a fumble in Indian territory, but
could not convert. The Indians took over on downs at their own 37
yard line. Mark Zurlis capped a 63 yard drive with a 2 yard TD and
then converted the kick to put North Haven up 22-0 after 3 periods.
At the start of the 4th quarter, NB
put together a 7 play, 65 yard drive to finally get on the board.
Corey Onofrio completed 4 big passes to Ryan Murphy and Tim Boyle
for most of the yardage and Murphy culminated the drive with a 5
yard TD run. Murphy's 2 point kick cut the score to 22-8. After an
Indians' punt, the TBirds worked another long drive into the North
Haven red zone.
The drive ended when Corey Onofrio
had a pass intercepted. North Haven took the ball and scored a 4th
TD to expand their lead to 28-8. Along the way, Greg Volpe had a 41
yard run and shortly after, Joe Schwab took a pitch and tore around
the left side and ran the final 11 yards for the TD. The drive ate
up all but 54 seconds of the final period. Determined to make a game
of it, the TBirds scored with 29 seconds left on a 54 yard pass from
Onofrio to Murphy to close the score at 28-14.
